The Comparison Creeper
We’ve all experienced it, here’s how I think about it
Pregnancy completely changed the way I think about exercise.
I’ve always been someone who loves to try different forms of movement be it dance, Pilates, strength training or running. I’ve generally been able to try new things and keep up.
Until Pregnancy hit my fitness routine like … BAM!!
The first trimester fatigue dropped my energy levels while random bouts of nausea meant working out was the last thing on my mind.
The second trimester I had more energy but with my body changing, I felt frustrated that I couldn’t do what I’d always been able to. In fact, things I had mastered now felt hard and unattainable with my growing belly.
The last trimester? All the rules went out the window. Some days I was ready for class and others I could feel my bed just calling me in for a big ‘ol nap.
It’s true what they say: pregnancy is a journey (and postpartum is a whole other one!). One of the most important lessons it’s taught me is that the comparison game, especially when it comes to what my own body used to be able to do, isn’t the least bit productive or helpful.
Our bodies are meant to change and adapt (especially when creating a whole new human!) throughout our lives. We’ll all face seasons of challenge, of ease and of seeing ourselves in new ways at some point. That’s all part of the journey.
So, the next time you find yourself facing what feels like a setback - pregnancy, injury, just not feeling up to it - and notice that comparison creeper creeping in, know that the adaptation you’re facing is actually helping you on your path to your best self.
