How to have a successful Pilates class
Newbie, or veteran, here’s how to set yourself up for a great class
I’ve been teaching Pilates for the better part of a decade (seriously, where does the time go?).
In that time, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students of all levels and familiarity with the Pilates system.
Through this, I’ve come to notice some similarities that, newbies especially, often experience as they start to learn the system and how their bodies move within the system.
Based on that, here are the top 3 suggestions I offer to anyone who joins my classes and is new to Pilates:
1. Find your breath
Focused breathing benefits your lung capacity and nervous system. Plus, it’ll ensure you’re fully activating your muscles and giving your body that sweet, sweet oxygen it needs.
2. Get out of your head
Let how your body feels lead and give your ego a little break.
3. Consistency is key
Like any exercise, the more you do it, the better you’ll get and the more benefit you’ll get out of it.
I’ll leave you with one extra tip I hear most often from newer Pilates clients…
(get ready, it’s a little spicy!):
If it feels easy you’re probably doing it wrong.
Let’s be real, there’s nothing wrong with doing things wrong, especially when you’re a newbie at something. BUT, if you find class is consistently feeling easy, that’s a good indication to chat with your instructor. They can help make sure you’re getting the most out of your movements and your time.
