4 Underrated Benefits of Pilates
Great reasons to love Pilates, beyond the obvious
I’d guess that if I asked a group of people why they love Pilates, I’d get answers like:
…Because it makes my core strong
…Because I feel flexible and strong at the same time
…Because I have a better sense of awareness in my body
…Because it’s a damn good workout (DUH!)
If you’ve been here for a while, you know how much I love touting the amazing benefits of Pilates, of which all of the above points are included. But, there are some lesser-known ones that I wanted to make sure that you, my Pilates-loving audience, also know about.
So, without further ado:
Love for the fascia
If you’ve been here a while, you know I also teach MELT and have a deep fascination with the fascia (say that 3 times fast!). That fascination actually started with Pilates because its movements help keep fascia hydrated, which keeps your body less stiff and more mobile.
Bone support
You can’t have strong bones without strong muscles and Pilates, especially on the reformer, helps to maintain and build bone strength.
Joint longevity
The low-impact, full range-of-motion exercises that are part of any Pilates practice help lubricate joints and strengthen the stabilizing muscles, which, over time, actually offers a form of joint protection too!
Cross-training benefits
We love movement that works hard for us. Pilates is great on its own, but the strength it brings to our movement patterns and stabilizer muscles only enhances how you perform in other sports - think running, strength training, cycling and swimming.
Whether you’re just starting out in your Pilates journey or have been practicing for many years, I believe there are always ways to switch it up and always new things to learn.
