Here’s the perfect tool for new moms

3 reasons Pilates is my postpartum go-to

I never doubted when I returned to exercise after having my little one, Charlie, that Pilates would be my first stop. Not only do I love the system itself, but Pilates’ focus on strength, stability and breathwork is a perfect starting point for any new mom, regardless of the birthing process she endured.

Here are a few of the reasons I chose to start my postpartum movement routine with gentle (I repeat…gentle) Pilates:

Recovery, Recovery, Recovery

Pilates helps strengthen and retrain the deep stabilizers in the body (aka the core and pelvic floor) using fundamental movements that focus on breathwork and control, all things every new mom can use. Plus, it’s all strength-based but low impact, which is perfect for recovery.

Posture

In addition to pregnancy, postpartum activities like feeding, carrying and trying to get a baby to sleep (aka bouncing, rocking, swaying, and more!) wreak havoc on posture. Pilates helps to realign the spine, strengthen the core and upper back and open up the chest, which will not only make you stand taller, it’ll make your body feel better.

You Time

Let’s be real, new moms have zero time for themselves post-baby, but Pilates is an easy form of exercise to sneak in when you have the energy and just a few minutes. Plus, it can be done pretty much anywhere and you can lay your little one right next to you as you do it (it’s never too early for Pilates in my book!).

Becoming a mom changed my whole mindset about exercise and Pilates. I now like to consider how the movements I’m doing are helping me as a human, but also as a mom.

Things like…

  • Strengthening my core so I can continue to carry my guy as he gets bigger,

  • Giving myself time to exercise, even if it’s only 5 minutes, so I can show up fully for him with a reset brain and some endorphins

  • Showing him (even though he may not understand) that movement routines are a part of our lives on a consistent basis,

While I created The Pilates Party To Go pre-baby, it’s actually my go-to tool since having him. It means I can do Pilates on my own schedule, wherever I am and I can choose the length of class, focus and intensity that I’m feeling at the moment.
